I'm just stuff you know, I Well, they asked me to come and talk about my senior photography. And so I just kind of put together a slideshow mostly for our presentation, mostly for I think beginners would get the most out of it, because it's I just spoke really about how you know, how to how I came up with my process for handling and working with my senior parents and their teenagers and just, you know, kind of being prepared and in holding their hands through their entire senior experience.

Yeah, I do. Lots of headshots. I do like a lot of one off headshots here in my home studio and it works out pretty great. And occasionally I'll do I'll work with senior clients as well you know, if they if they have like, well if they do like boomerang sessions and they come back for like cap and gown or maybe they change their hair or something or prom. So I do I work with lots of individuals even online dating for you know, adults they want they want to profile. I don't know if you can hear my cat you just need to follow me everywhere.

Which which room and then for people who are thinking about starting their own little studio or taking a room in their house and make it into a studio, what should they know? What do they need to think about

lots of things you have to have, you just have to make a nice presentation for them when they first arrive at your home and, well my, my setup is really nice because clients don't, you know, kind of traipse through my entire home when they get here that my dining room is like immediately to the left when you enter in that's where I have my studio space set up so so it works out really well unless they need to go to the restroom they're going to just go down the hall and to the left and so you know I just try to make sure that that everything looks nice and presentable and it's clean and it doesn't smell I got after my son the other day because I was like look I got a client coming at one o'clock and just say you know FYI and then he gets up late and then goes and he starts making food and I'm I am literally like my head's gonna explode because I don't want I don't I want to smell nice so I kind of lost it

just try to keep everything so no food can be made in the house an hour before I have clients coming over here I'm actually thinking lately I actually as much as I have enjoyed my home studio and do enjoy it because it's convenient I got a short commute I kind of been wanting a studio like a storefront just to kind of avoid stuff like that but

literally I'm not gonna lie to you literally he was he was making salmon I just went I went ballistic like I just bought this brand new beautiful just like my kitchen remodeled like what two years ago I got this beautiful you know vent hood and I'm like you didn't even turn the vent hood on like it just smells in the entire house I was like mortified going around. Here's a little tip for you if you're trying to get rid of since poop hurry works great everywhere else

It's important to have a good a good stock of poop hurry just in case your son makes salmon 10 minutes before you have people coming over. I and you know I haven't really small I don't have I have a ginormous house. I have a small space, but I love it. It's perfect. But I do have the equipment that that I use, which is the Godox gear because it's all cordless. And it allows me to save space. I'm big on on making the most of the real estate that I have in the floor space that I have. So everything is like cordless, and it works so well together. So you can make Wow, where do I get it from? You make the most

I like them because they're really nice and small. But I just really really love the 300 because I'm all about and is all about the best bang for your buck and the 300 is it with that LED light. I mean, it's just awesome. I love it. I was I was talking to her about that last night so yeah,

And we'll get to see a lot of things and a lot of do a lot of things and see a lot of places. So it'll be quick, though. It'd be like, Look at this. Take a picture. Let's go see that. Take another picture.

I thought so I thought you're gonna say because there's some secret places where you can look through like a little hole or crack in the wall and see this great view. I wish I was shooting all these textures because it's, you know, beautiful, wonderful textures everywhere. So I'm with my camera like, zoomed in close, like of the wall, like taking textures. And my wife was like, people keep stopping and looking at it. Like what's like, I think they thought I was like, had some secret chamber. Looking through zooming in on textures.

That reminds me of the time that I went to, we went to Yellowstone, and we got up really early to go and watch like, see if we can see some wolves or something. It's, we we're driving along and we see a bunch of photographers like people with all their scopes and stuff, like you could see a whole line of people on this hill and we're like they must they must be seeing something so like we go up there. And like what's what's up guys? What are you looking at in there? Oh, we're just looking at butcher walls and stuff. And, and it was just really funny because I walk up there and I'm like, Angela's National Geographic photographer. You know? We're just standing around talking, you know, people are letting us look through their scopes and stuff and somebody turn around and somebody says, Yeah, I heard there's somebody a National Geographic photographer here. Me

I don't know. I just like to sing in the shower. You know, just whatever. I don't I don't think I can sing. I like to pretend I can sing. So I did used to be acquired though I did.

Because I was inquire, yes. You know why my girlfriend talked me into it. So there was a shocker. And I'll do you two guys. You guys will love this. You know the other reason why I did it because it was like the second semester is right when we're starting. Because I got out of one one session of Fayyad. I didn't care at that point. And we were starting the rustling section. I'm like, screw that she's gonna stick with the girls.

We used to do handstands, Angelo Texas school. Yeah, I was just trying to remember what what started that call where it all started?

Oh, I just got I just started getting into yoga. Like, that's when I first like, got onto Instagram. And I just started seeing this big yoga community. And there was like these, they were these daily challenges. And so you, like, take pictures of yourself doing whatever pose it was for that day. And so, and I was like, I just really wanted to learn how to handstand I wanted to, to balance on my hands. And so And the big thing was, you know, to photograph yourself hand standing everywhere, hashtag handstands everywhere. So I was just doing it. I was just doing it everywhere. You can actually have fancy I can't even really hold it. I never could hold it for very long.

But that was our class picture, I think or a reunion picture. I think we're

I'm still trying to. Yeah, that's a handsome school. And and I also have one of us hands standing at imaging as well.

It was filling a gap in the market. Because, you know, nobody else was having a drinking podcast talking about photography. So there you go. We filled a gap much needed gap marketplace. It's good advice.

So how is your new studio coming along? Carl?

Carl Caylor: 29:52

Well, I was just telling guys, I had an interesting week of seniors. So Monday, I was in it will is Sunday we had to take a unplanned trip, love and a half hour drive to Wisconsin and back because my wife's uncle passed away. And so we drove down there. And so we had funeral undermined. And Monday, she had Monday off because we didn't know if we were coming back late Sunday night, or if we're gonna stay over whatever. We ended up just driving all on the same day. But so I went in the studio, and I thought I'm gonna work half day sleep. So, while I'm there, I get this phone call Monday. And this gentleman was asking, do you do copy work? I said, Well, sure I can. But you know, what kind of photograph who took the photograph? Because there's always a copyright issue. You got to make sure that you know that not breaking any laws. He's like, Well, I don't think so was back in 2010 2010. Not that long ago.

Michael Mowbray: 30:56

Right. So 70 years thing, you know.

Carl Caylor: 31:00

And you follow it up. I say, Well, this is for a funeral. I thought oh, okay, well, how far away are you just bringing it in? We'll take a look at it. We'll see we can do. I'll see how fast I can get it back for you. If we're able to do it, or maybe I can track down people whatever it takes. And any I could hear him talking in the background to a woman in the room. And she said yeah, I can run over there right away. So about 1015 minutes later, door opens and incomes this woman nice class See dress woman, and she's holding on the photograph. And I looked at it. And it was from an event, a hospice event back in 2010. And it had a border on it said hospice, something 2010. And I said, well, and she mentioned, she said, Well, I know this is for a funeral, your invention there on the phone, but there's no rush. stuff first. So if you contact me for funeral stuff, we need it right now. Right? So, okay. Russia, well, the gentleman is just got diagnosed with lung cancer. They're given six to eight months to live. So he's planning his funeral. And I said, Is this Dave's this the person I talked to on the phone? She said, Yep, this is Dave. And I thought, okay. That's interesting. It's a new one for me. But I thought, you know, if you get a chance to plan out your own funeral, that is kind of an interesting concept, too. So he's, she said, he's picking out his music, and he wants played, and he's got this photograph and everything else, as well. I'll get right on this everything. And I call there was a copyright on the back. So I called the studio in the area that the copyright belongs to. And they said, go ahead and copy it, because it changed ownerships throughout the years and everything else. So they said, We don't want to bother just copying, it's fine. Which

it, because they might have the they might have the file and you can save a generation make it look better. And it's, you know, the law. And it's just common courtesy besides. But they said, go ahead and copy it. So copied, I was actually mounting it. Because I forget, I printed it out myself. And it's a mountain net, and phone ring. And I was talking to somebody else, a high school high school senior. And I heard the door open, I walked up and another older woman walked in very classy nice hat and everything ought to do it up and everything. And I just kind of put my hand up, set up it right there. And she said, No problem. And I got off the phone and I said, How can I help you? And she said, Well, I wonder if you photograph or can photograph things for Airbnb? And I said, Sure, like the guests that are staying there, or is it Airbnb itself? She said, Well, Airbnb, because it's, you know, for a website, so no problem. We got to talk a little bit. And out of the blue. She goes, How much do you charge for funeral pictures?

Beautiful picture. So what do you mean funeral pictures? You said, Well, I'm 89 years old right now. And I really like a nice photograph from Iran to have twice in three days. Oh, wow. Never. It's like, okay.

so a whole new niche speaking of niches and everything. Yeah. Wow. Filling it filling the needs,

I guess maybe flyers at the old folks home, you know, by and ahead. Yeah, get

a headshot. You already think about it's not that far off reality. I mean, they pre sell burial lots surely pre sale, coffins and all that kind of stuff. And the funeral homes themselves are now selling the whole, whole funeral experience.

I am. So my aunt passed away a couple of years ago from ovarian cancer, and, you know, like, it was just, she was sick for a long time. And so all of her, she, she lived in El Paso all her life. And then she moved up here to Dallas, because her kids were taking care of her. And you know, and I think that's really important. So I think it's really, I actually think it's really neat that, that you have people contacting you to do that, because I made it, you know, a point to take their family pictures together and to have a nice portrait for them, that they could, you know, have for, you know, it's an you know, it sucks, but it's a second thing to think about but but it's something that everybody really should have, you know,

policy so your family doesn't have to scramble and the best thing they can find is, you know, you eating fried chicken at the family reunion, like eight years ago, you know, well,

can you that's that's how I got my grandma, both my grandmother's photographs was because of a wedding I photographed. And I was getting kind of worried because, you know, back when I photographed a lot of weddings. I always told him we need to talk at least two weeks away from the wedding. Make sure everything's in line with every thing. And the week before I want to be talking again, make sure nothing got changed and times locations all that I could not get a hold of Scoble at all. And I mean, they ghost me. And lo and behold, they like three days before. And finally, I would think, am I gonna show up and not have them there? You know, it's a long way away. This is a long way we're waiting. And she finally called back her dad passed away in an accident. And that's why they were all gone everything. And she said, Well, you know, you had said, any special requests, you want to make sure you you let us know ahead of time. I said, Yeah. She said, Well, we have somebody had a picture made on cloth from my dad. And it's thought they sorted onto a pillow that the ring bearer is going to take it up at that the rings are on his pillow. I thought, Oh, absolutely, we'll make sure we concentrate on on that pillow in the ring bearer and, you know, part of data being there. And when I saw the picture that was on the pillow, it was the backside of dad's head, I could almost see his his right cheek, and he's holding on to a canopy, or I could see the canopy or more than most of the space. And that was the only picture they could find of dad. How sad is this? And so actually, you can see right behind right now this picture of my mom I did when I got back from that wedding. I told my mom I'm going to photograph you and my grandmother who's on wall right over here. And I wouldn't photograph them my grandfather has already passed away but I photographed a lot of my family members after that, because I shut down like a week and just travel and photograph my family members guessing Yeah, I am not going to have that happen. Dang,

when I shot that was one of our I mean, one of our mental checklist things. What I would always say to Crystal sister with most of my weddings, especially at the receptions like make sure that we've got any of the grandparents smiling, having fun, or whatever. Same thing with the parents, because I can't tell you how many times three or four months after or even a month after it's like can we get this image of my grandma because she passed away and that's the only good photo of her because like

that's a good tip poo pourri and taking pictures of elderly at the wedding I have told my kids that when I die I already know what song I want played. And I want to be a tree so you all can split me in like put me on your property and nobody everybody's dancing.
