So let me tell you a little bit about our guest. She has three amazing adult kids, and they all call her Mo. Hey, we're off to a good start already. I was an adult first.

Michael Mowbray:No, I don't know. To tuxedo cats and Jehovah. I just saw your Jehovah. Your child who has a child. She likes long walks on the beach in headstands. She likes to drink Nespresso. Laughing is her favorite. She is a breast cancer survivor. She's also a certified professional photographer, and a Master of photography. Carl Caylor:It's true.
Michael Mowbray:Well, you just I don't know if this is this will take us into PG 13 territory but you just kind of started speaking I was gonna say you popped your cherry but I can't say that because I might take as in the PG 13 Oh, wait, I said it. Oh
Angela Navarette:yeah, I I did my first guild presentation last night and it went pretty. Pretty well. I'm pretty I was very anxious for a long time but I finally I did it. I did it.
Dan Frievalt:Where and what was that in Texas or was
Angela Navarette:it Yeah, I was. I was in Abilene. So it was just a quick it's just over Yeah, just
Dan Frievalt:before it's an inside joke.
Angela Navarette:Yeah, so that was fun. That was fun. I came prepared with my yummy dream.
Dan Frievalt:Oh, I thought you had notes and stuff. Oh. Did you burn up some of that plant in your background?
Angela Navarette:My like, you know, plan to be true. As background, you know, so yeah, drinking alcohol, but I'm just drinking celery.
Michael Mowbray:That's like, last week I had some blue curacao and some lemonade and rum and vodka. And that that looks like the next day.
Angela Navarette:This is delicious. And if you probably can put some vodka or something in it, and it's good celery, apple, cucumber and lime, it's delicious.
Carl Caylor:Mash we can make a mash out of it. We could distill it, I'm sure of it.
Michael Mowbray:So what do you talk about? We use in Abilene land.
Angela Navarette:I'm just stuff you know, I Well, they asked me to come and talk about my senior photography. And so I just kind of put together a slideshow mostly for our presentation, mostly for I think beginners would get the most out of it, because it's I just spoke really about how you know, how to how I came up with my process for handling and working with my senior parents and their teenagers and just, you know, kind of being prepared and in holding their hands through their entire senior experience.
Michael Mowbray:It's really important stuff that most people don't know.
Dan Frievalt:I get in trouble when I hold my seniors hand during this. I don't know it's kind of awkward. Well. Yeah, it's the length of time that I hold on. I think that's what is awkwardness
Carl Caylor:to Mississippi.
Angela Navarette:I'm holding my parents hands.
Carl Caylor:Oh, okay. That could be awkward too. But just saying. You also have in a new home studio. Is that correct? Angela?
Angela Navarette:Yeah, I do. Lots of headshots. I do like a lot of one off headshots here in my home studio and it works out pretty great. And occasionally I'll do I'll work with senior clients as well you know, if they if they have like, well if they do like boomerang sessions and they come back for like cap and gown or maybe they change their hair or something or prom. So I do I work with lots of individuals even online dating for you know, adults they want they want to profile. I don't know if you can hear my cat you just need to follow me everywhere.

Michael Mowbray:Well, I was I was teaching when I you know, I didn't have that all day to play and create. Just shooting on location teach. So that's my excuse.
Dan Frievalt:That's your excuse. Yes.
Carl Caylor:Something I want to play. I gotta get to get the photograph. Again. For a treat. Yeah. As your daughter. You got a loan with it with your daughter too.
Angela Navarette:Yeah, yes. Yep. Evelyn. She's, yep, that's one of my one of my favorite pieces that I've ever done

Michael Mowbray:Otherwise, it's one of us. So true. So you got to homebase studio, which surprisingly is in your home, and
Angela Navarette:I no longer have a dining room. I was just gonna say that I just pile male on top of the table.
Michael Mowbray:Which which room and then for people who are thinking about starting their own little studio or taking a room in their house and make it into a studio, what should they know? What do they need to think about
Angela Navarette:lots of things you have to have, you just have to make a nice presentation for them when they first arrive at your home and, well my, my setup is really nice because clients don't, you know, kind of traipse through my entire home when they get here that my dining room is like immediately to the left when you enter in that's where I have my studio space set up so so it works out really well unless they need to go to the restroom they're going to just go down the hall and to the left and so you know I just try to make sure that that everything looks nice and presentable and it's clean and it doesn't smell I got after my son the other day because I was like look I got a client coming at one o'clock and just say you know FYI and then he gets up late and then goes and he starts making food and I'm I am literally like my head's gonna explode because I don't want I don't I want to smell nice so I kind of lost it
Carl Caylor:so the big cookies
Angela Navarette:just try to keep everything so no food can be made in the house an hour before I have clients coming over here I'm actually thinking lately I actually as much as I have enjoyed my home studio and do enjoy it because it's convenient I got a short commute I kind of been wanting a studio like a storefront just to kind of avoid stuff like that but
Michael Mowbray:there's a really nice one coming available and appear I think
Dan Frievalt:I'm just gonna warm this salmon up real quick
Angela Navarette:literally I'm not gonna lie to you literally he was he was making salmon I just went I went ballistic like I just bought this brand new beautiful just like my kitchen remodeled like what two years ago I got this beautiful you know vent hood and I'm like you didn't even turn the vent hood on like it just smells in the entire house I was like mortified going around. Here's a little tip for you if you're trying to get rid of since poop hurry works great everywhere else
Michael Mowbray:just spray right on the salmon

Angela Navarette:try to make sure everything you know it's presentable It smells nice it's clean and you know most people when they walk in are just like oh wow, I didn't know what they were expecting but they just weren't expecting my my professional setup that I got in studios.
Michael Mowbray:So it's oh wow, I get a lot of oh, wow
Angela Navarette:this is really this is so cool. How long have you been doing this? And I'm like, Mr. Mr. Furley sniffle weeks
Dan Frievalt:Wow, get this. Yeah, Jing do you get this because people will walk into my studio every once in awhile now looking at it like oh, these are awesome. Did you take these photographer
Angela Navarette:do I have like a whole I have a whole wall of you know, portraits and sample portraits up there and I get that exactly thing like oh, did you take these now Sally my neighbor
Dan Frievalt:yeah see with the friends
Carl Caylor:I have everybody that's coming in the studio so far has asked that same question done and how do you take these wall if I didn't ankle
Michael Mowbray:I guess enough people were altered using other people's work that maybe people don't know you know?
Angela Navarette:Well, I guess people just don't know what to say. So let's
Carl Caylor:say Oh, I didn't take these pictures. I made these pictures.
Michael Mowbray:Yeah, so So smell smells important. Now.
Angela Navarette:It's important to have a good a good stock of poop hurry just in case your son makes salmon 10 minutes before you have people coming over. I and you know I haven't really small I don't have I have a ginormous house. I have a small space, but I love it. It's perfect. But I do have the equipment that that I use, which is the Godox gear because it's all cordless. And it allows me to save space. I'm big on on making the most of the real estate that I have in the floor space that I have. So everything is like cordless, and it works so well together. So you can make Wow, where do I get it from? You make the most
Michael Mowbray:out of your space with Mo light.
Angela Navarette:And I can be more I can be the most easiest mo ever.
Michael Mowbray:Second moist? Yes.
Angela Navarette:Yeah, yeah. So I and I just updated all of my gear. I used to have like a 600. And I still had my 360 that I use, you know from that I was like my
Dan Frievalt:62 Yeah, that's what did the other day I'm like, I might need this.
Angela Navarette:Yeah, it still works. It's still great. So i i Actually I had my 360 as my main light in there, but then I up I upgraded in December, I bought an AB 302 100. I like them because they're really nice and small. But I just really really love the 300 because I'm all about and is all about the best bang for your buck and the 300 is it with that LED light. I mean, it's just awesome. I love it. I was I was talking to her about that last night so yeah,
Dan Frievalt:yeah. Love me the 300
Angela Navarette:but I do all sorts of stuff in my studio. Also, I even I even use natural light occasionally. Girl
Dan Frievalt:What do you buy that from?
Angela Navarette:It's free. It's free.
Michael Mowbray:You probably augmented somehow. I wonder how you roll? Is there maybe scrim of some sort or two? Or?
Angela Navarette:I definitely use I love my my rolly rolly scrim Flector. Sure.
Dan Frievalt:Yeah, I use that's gonna be a moment there somewhere.
Michael Mowbray:I'll overdub that is like my rolling scrim Flecker my holy moly my
Angela Navarette:rolling most scream flexor. I use that all the time. I use it every level Yeah, I have lots of equipment from low light. I love it. And it just makes it makes life easier for me for sure. For sure.

Angela Navarette:that's what counts. I just got back from Greece. That was fun. It was awesome. I'm getting ready to go to Italy. I'm sorry. I didn't get to take pictures like I wanted to, but Oh, well. Yeah, I took pictures in my head and I lived. I lived the memories.
Michael Mowbray:Very. Where are you going in Italy?
Angela Navarette:Um, we are going to Rome. Venice. Florence and Sorento
Michael Mowbray:taking a vegetable around. Are you taking a rickety bus?
Angela Navarette:Yeah, well, we're, yeah, we're going on a tour. It's a guided tour kind of thing. So it's our first you know, kind of experience with traveling overseas, so. So it'll be fun. And we'll get to see a lot of things and a lot of do a lot of things and see a lot of places. So it'll be quick, though. It'd be like, Look at this. Take a picture. Let's go see that. Take another picture.
Michael Mowbray:Drink the house wine. That's one tip. I've I've always heard drink the house wine. Yeah. Isn't the house wine. Pretty good.
Dan Frievalt:Yeah. And it's free. It's cheaper than soda or water.
Angela Navarette:I'm excited to be walking around because I I've seen like on the tick tock that they're like these. You can go up to like a little. It's like a little wine drive thru in Italy and get some good wine out of these little windows and stuff. And I'm hoping to see, I'm hoping to see. So
Dan Frievalt:I thought so I thought you're gonna say because there's some secret places where you can look through like a little hole or crack in the wall and see this great view. I wish I was shooting all these textures because it's, you know, beautiful, wonderful textures everywhere. So I'm with my camera like, zoomed in close, like of the wall, like taking textures. And my wife was like, people keep stopping and looking at it. Like what's like, I think they thought I was like, had some secret chamber. Looking through zooming in on textures.
Angela Navarette:That reminds me of the time that I went to, we went to Yellowstone, and we got up really early to go and watch like, see if we can see some wolves or something. It's, we we're driving along and we see a bunch of photographers like people with all their scopes and stuff, like you could see a whole line of people on this hill and we're like they must they must be seeing something so like we go up there. And like what's what's up guys? What are you looking at in there? Oh, we're just looking at butcher walls and stuff. And, and it was just really funny because I walk up there and I'm like, Angela's National Geographic photographer. You know? We're just standing around talking, you know, people are letting us look through their scopes and stuff and somebody turn around and somebody says, Yeah, I heard there's somebody a National Geographic photographer here. Me
Carl Caylor:Yeah, so fun to mess with people.
Angela Navarette:I didn't have cool camera gear then. So you know. And now now that I do I don't think I ever want to take my gear with me. I just want to like eat and drink.
Michael Mowbray:Why don't you shoot Nikon?
Angela Navarette:Don't even start with me. Don't
Michael Mowbray:Oh, someday you'll get some cool camera gear.
Angela Navarette:Don't start with me. I promised I wouldn't curse.
Carl Caylor:You don't like a window light when Godox puts out you know the products that can light the mountain range and the wolves from down across the valley.
Michael Mowbray:Yeah, oh yeah.
Angela Navarette:I love all my Nikon gear and I've never had any problems with my Godox working with my Nikon gear. So how about that? What else do you want to know? Do you want to you want to hear me sing La la la la la la la la la. I can say this feels really awkward. I don't know what I'm doing.
Michael Mowbray:I didn't know you could sing until you saying I don't know a month or so ago on. I don't know what it was. Was it something you sent in a messenger or whatever you're saying? I'm like, holy crap, you can say what what when did this come about?
Angela Navarette:I don't know. I just like to sing in the shower. You know, just whatever. I don't I don't think I can sing. I like to pretend I can sing. So I did used to be acquired though I did.
Michael Mowbray:I was just here
Angela Navarette:but just because you're required doesn't mean you can see
Michael Mowbray:Because I was inquire, yes. You know why my girlfriend talked me into it. So there was a shocker. And I'll do you two guys. You guys will love this. You know the other reason why I did it because it was like the second semester is right when we're starting. Because I got out of one one session of Fayyad. I didn't care at that point. And we were starting the rustling section. I'm like, screw that she's gonna stick with the girls.
Dan Frievalt:Well, it's kind of similar. Yeah.
Carl Caylor:We used to do handstands, Angelo Texas school. Yeah, I was just trying to remember what what started that call where it all started?
Angela Navarette:Oh, I just got I just started getting into yoga. Like, that's when I first like, got onto Instagram. And I just started seeing this big yoga community. And there was like these, they were these daily challenges. And so you, like, take pictures of yourself doing whatever pose it was for that day. And so, and I was like, I just really wanted to learn how to handstand I wanted to, to balance on my hands. And so And the big thing was, you know, to photograph yourself hand standing everywhere, hashtag handstands everywhere. So I was just doing it. I was just doing it everywhere. You can actually have fancy I can't even really hold it. I never could hold it for very long.
Carl Caylor:But that was our class picture, I think or a reunion picture. I think we're
Angela Navarette:I'm still trying to. Yeah, that's a handsome school. And and I also have one of us hands standing at imaging as well.
Michael Mowbray:Yeah. Didn't you do one in the beam mo sign or something like that? Yes. I think
Angela Navarette:I did the splits when I did the split. You did
Michael Mowbray:that. So it'd be more but we cropped off the RV. So
Angela Navarette:yeah. Yeah.
Dan Frievalt:Remember that time that out? Currently the fall convention for WPA and scotch Sam and I
Michael Mowbray:tried to do handstands Yes. Was that before or after the doctor but kilocalories
Dan Frievalt:it was before. But it was still wasn't good. Yeah. So everyone used to love to come into Wisconsin, because to judge and to speak, because it was a party time. And that really hasn't changed. Wisconsin silhouette that five, five out of 10. Drunken cities
Michael Mowbray:was eight. Seven was a top five. Hence why our podcast is photo happy hour.
Dan Frievalt:Yes, yes.
Michael Mowbray:It was filling a gap in the market. Because, you know, nobody else was having a drinking podcast talking about photography. So there you go. We filled a gap much needed gap marketplace. It's good advice.
Carl Caylor:Find the need, feel the need.
Angela Navarette:So how is your new studio coming along? Carl?
Carl Caylor:Well, I was just telling guys, I had an interesting week of seniors. So Monday, I was in it will is Sunday we had to take a unplanned trip, love and a half hour drive to Wisconsin and back because my wife's uncle passed away. And so we drove down there. And so we had funeral undermined. And Monday, she had Monday off because we didn't know if we were coming back late Sunday night, or if we're gonna stay over whatever. We ended up just driving all on the same day. But so I went in the studio, and I thought I'm gonna work half day sleep. So, while I'm there, I get this phone call Monday. And this gentleman was asking, do you do copy work? I said, Well, sure I can. But you know, what kind of photograph who took the photograph? Because there's always a copyright issue. You got to make sure that you know that not breaking any laws. He's like, Well, I don't think so was back in 2010 2010. Not that long ago.
Michael Mowbray:Right. So 70 years thing, you know.
Carl Caylor:And you follow it up. I say, Well, this is for a funeral. I thought oh, okay, well, how far away are you just bringing it in? We'll take a look at it. We'll see we can do. I'll see how fast I can get it back for you. If we're able to do it, or maybe I can track down people whatever it takes. And any I could hear him talking in the background to a woman in the room. And she said yeah, I can run over there right away. So about 1015 minutes later, door opens and incomes this woman nice class See dress woman, and she's holding on the photograph. And I looked at it. And it was from an event, a hospice event back in 2010. And it had a border on it said hospice, something 2010. And I said, well, and she mentioned, she said, Well, I know this is for a funeral, your invention there on the phone, but there's no rush. stuff first. So if you contact me for funeral stuff, we need it right now. Right? So, okay. Russia, well, the gentleman is just got diagnosed with lung cancer. They're given six to eight months to live. So he's planning his funeral. And I said, Is this Dave's this the person I talked to on the phone? She said, Yep, this is Dave. And I thought, okay. That's interesting. It's a new one for me. But I thought, you know, if you get a chance to plan out your own funeral, that is kind of an interesting concept, too. So he's, she said, he's picking out his music, and he wants played, and he's got this photograph and everything else, as well. I'll get right on this everything. And I call there was a copyright on the back. So I called the studio in the area that the copyright belongs to. And they said, go ahead and copy it, because it changed ownerships throughout the years and everything else. So they said, We don't want to bother just copying, it's fine. Which
Michael Mowbray:again, so for everybody, please do that. Before checkout be somebody's work Check, check with the photographer, check into
Carl Caylor:it, because they might have the they might have the file and you can save a generation make it look better. And it's, you know, the law. And it's just common courtesy besides. But they said, go ahead and copy it. So copied, I was actually mounting it. Because I forget, I printed it out myself. And it's a mountain net, and phone ring. And I was talking to somebody else, a high school high school senior. And I heard the door open, I walked up and another older woman walked in very classy nice hat and everything ought to do it up and everything. And I just kind of put my hand up, set up it right there. And she said, No problem. And I got off the phone and I said, How can I help you? And she said, Well, I wonder if you photograph or can photograph things for Airbnb? And I said, Sure, like the guests that are staying there, or is it Airbnb itself? She said, Well, Airbnb, because it's, you know, for a website, so no problem. We got to talk a little bit. And out of the blue. She goes, How much do you charge for funeral pictures?
Michael Mowbray:Carl's got a niche.
Carl Caylor:Beautiful picture. So what do you mean funeral pictures? You said, Well, I'm 89 years old right now. And I really like a nice photograph from Iran to have twice in three days. Oh, wow. Never. It's like, okay.
Michael Mowbray:And both times you talked to that person? Who was funerals is gonna be
Carl Caylor:so a whole new niche speaking of niches and everything. Yeah. Wow. Filling it filling the needs,
Michael Mowbray:I guess maybe flyers at the old folks home, you know, by and ahead. Yeah, get
Carl Caylor:a headshot. You already think about it's not that far off reality. I mean, they pre sell burial lots surely pre sale, coffins and all that kind of stuff. And the funeral homes themselves are now selling the whole, whole funeral experience.
Angela Navarette:I am. So my aunt passed away a couple of years ago from ovarian cancer, and, you know, like, it was just, she was sick for a long time. And so all of her, she, she lived in El Paso all her life. And then she moved up here to Dallas, because her kids were taking care of her. And you know, and I think that's really important. So I think it's really, I actually think it's really neat that, that you have people contacting you to do that, because I made it, you know, a point to take their family pictures together and to have a nice portrait for them, that they could, you know, have for, you know, it's an you know, it sucks, but it's a second thing to think about but but it's something that everybody really should have, you know,
Michael Mowbray:policy so your family doesn't have to scramble and the best thing they can find is, you know, you eating fried chicken at the family reunion, like eight years ago, you know, well,
Carl Caylor:can you that's that's how I got my grandma, both my grandmother's photographs was because of a wedding I photographed. And I was getting kind of worried because, you know, back when I photographed a lot of weddings. I always told him we need to talk at least two weeks away from the wedding. Make sure everything's in line with every thing. And the week before I want to be talking again, make sure nothing got changed and times locations all that I could not get a hold of Scoble at all. And I mean, they ghost me. And lo and behold, they like three days before. And finally, I would think, am I gonna show up and not have them there? You know, it's a long way away. This is a long way we're waiting. And she finally called back her dad passed away in an accident. And that's why they were all gone everything. And she said, Well, you know, you had said, any special requests, you want to make sure you you let us know ahead of time. I said, Yeah. She said, Well, we have somebody had a picture made on cloth from my dad. And it's thought they sorted onto a pillow that the ring bearer is going to take it up at that the rings are on his pillow. I thought, Oh, absolutely, we'll make sure we concentrate on on that pillow in the ring bearer and, you know, part of data being there. And when I saw the picture that was on the pillow, it was the backside of dad's head, I could almost see his his right cheek, and he's holding on to a canopy, or I could see the canopy or more than most of the space. And that was the only picture they could find of dad. How sad is this? And so actually, you can see right behind right now this picture of my mom I did when I got back from that wedding. I told my mom I'm going to photograph you and my grandmother who's on wall right over here. And I wouldn't photograph them my grandfather has already passed away but I photographed a lot of my family members after that, because I shut down like a week and just travel and photograph my family members guessing Yeah, I am not going to have that happen. Dang,
Angela Navarette:there you go around to the senior centers and
Michael Mowbray:when I shot that was one of our I mean, one of our mental checklist things. What I would always say to Crystal sister with most of my weddings, especially at the receptions like make sure that we've got any of the grandparents smiling, having fun, or whatever. Same thing with the parents, because I can't tell you how many times three or four months after or even a month after it's like can we get this image of my grandma because she passed away and that's the only good photo of her because like
Angela Navarette:that's a good tip poo pourri and taking pictures of elderly at the wedding I have told my kids that when I die I already know what song I want played. And I want to be a tree so you all can split me in like put me on your property and nobody everybody's dancing.
Michael Mowbray:John thought about that too. But you know what if somebody plants a tree and the tree dies neuro like
Carl Caylor:to be
Michael Mowbray:so I got a question for you one last question for you. So you were born and raised in like El Paso area, right? Yes. And lifelong Texan. Yes. Why don't you have more of a Texan accent?
Angela Navarette:Oh, that's easy because I lived on a border town. Oh people who have that Texas drawl are they they're from like East Texas you know and even in even in Dallas area like my my nephew he's got a little bit of a tween kind of and so yeah, cuz I'm I'm from a border town that's why
Michael Mowbray:Okay, makes sense. I thought maybe you just filtered it out somehow that maybe you just filtered it out somehow.
Angela Navarette:I couldn't talk like this if you want me to know that sounds that sounds more like Shin and
Michael Mowbray:does a little bit of Alabama in there.
Carl Caylor:Yeah southern drawl. I thought you're gonna ask her if about chili if beans and chili were a thing or not?
